Online support for survivors with disabilities. [Thursday
July 26th, 2012 at 7:22pm]
lilsinger_95
I recently undertook a Google search for online message boards specifically for people with disabilities who are survivors of sexual assault. I found nothing, so I began my own. Right now, it’s not a lot to look at, though I intend to add to it in the coming days and weeks. Please pass this along to anyone that may be interested, and please feel free to link to it.

Updating Existing Contacts on my Phone [Saturday
December 10th, 2011 at 3:38pm]

aurora_nebulosa
How do I update an existing contact on my HP iPAQ Glisten with Windows Mobile 6.5? When I go to my Phone window and select the number I want to use to update my existing contact then hit Edit, none of my existing contacts come up, just stuff like "New contact", "Pay my bill", etc. (I am with AT&T and their customer service couldn't help me.)

Can anyone help a fellow disabled person who might be in danger? [Saturday
December 3rd, 2011 at 6:33am]

rainbow_goddess
This person is in Idaho, USA, and may be in danger in her living situation. She has limited mobility and doesn't know where to ask for help. I have advised her to phone Adult Protective Services, but from what I've read online that organization seems geared toward senior citizens.

Greetings.

I cannot seem to increase or decrease the speech rate on my phone.

I am using an HP Glisten with Windows Mobile 6.5 and MobileSpeak installed purchased from AT&T's disability center.

When I hit my Command Key + either the left or right arrow key, I hear "Rate " ("Rate 1" "Rate 2" etc. etc.), but I never hear the actual speech rate increase or decrease.

HELP!

How do I get my speech rate/speed to increase/decrease???

Thanks.

Muting the Ringtone and MobileSpeak [Friday
October 21st, 2011 at 5:37pm]

aurora_nebulosa
Greetings.

First, the obligatory stats: I've an HP iPAQ Glisten phone with Windows Mobile 6.5 and MobileSpeak 4.5.2.

Now, to my question...

How, exactly, do I mut the ringer on this phone so I can hear my caller ID being read by MobileSpeak? The MS manual simply doesn't make sense to me on this point (Spanish to English translation?).

Thanks.

Phone Navigation Problems [Monday
October 10th, 2011 at 2:13pm]

aurora_nebulosa
Greetings.

I am presently using an HP iPAQ Glisten mobile/cell phone with Windows Mobile 6.5 and Mobile Speak.

When I bring up the composition window for a text message and have entered in all my contacts, I am then unable to navigate down to where I can enter the actual text for the message! When I hit the Down Arrow, it just keeps me in the "To" field (where all of my selected contacts have been entered)! I can't get out of the "To" field by using my arrow keys!

A similar problem appears to exist when I am in Internet Explorer: When I am in a multi-line text box, after I have entered text, I can find no way to get out of that text box to take other actions. If I press "Enter", it just takes me down a line, but keeps me in the text box and I can't get out of it do to any other actions, such as hit a "Submit" button in a form!

HELP!!!

OK, guys, I recently purchased an HP Glisten with MobileSpeak on it. I ordered it via AT&T's disability services.

However, when my screen goes off (is that Standby Mode?), it sometimes beeps at me about every ten seconds or more! How do I stop this and why does it keep beeping at me???

Thanks.

Does anyone know of a calendar web site (along the lines of, but other than, yahoo) that plays nicely with Internet Explorer's "accessibility" features of text size, zoom and custom color schemes?

"Перспектива" проводит митинг «ДЕТИ ДОЛЖНЫ УЧИТЬСЯ ВМЕСТЕ» [Monday

- поддержка реализации на практике инклюзивного образования, определенного в Законе г. Москвы «Об образовании лиц с ограниченными возможностями здоровья»;

The Fear of Failure, In Recovery [Tuesday
March 29th, 2011 at 9:48am]

theyarnproject
Here I am.
The past few weeks...I have been in a funk. I have been fighting this internal turmoil.
I spent YEARS in a wheelchair. At at 22, I was told, that was it. The wheelchair was going to be my way of getting around, for the rest of my days. Walking WOULD NOT be in the cards, for me.
I accepted that. Maybe not easily, at first. But, over time...I came to trust the wheelchair. I came to view it, much the same way a child views a security blanket.
And now...I have recently had a surgery, that has allowed me to walk.
Currently, I am involved in a painful regimen, of exercise. I am using forearm canes, and taking quite a few tumbles. I am walking.
I am happy, I am walking.
And, at the same time...I AM TERRIFIED!
My family keeps telling me that, eventually, I will walk cane free. I see that this is what they want. IT IS WHAT I WANT! The opportunity to walk, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!
But, what if I can't? What if I NEED the forearm canes, and will never walk without them?
Will my family be upset? Will I let them down?
I will try to get better...to walk cane free. But, so much pressure comes at me, over this. I am just terrified. If I have to use canes, I am going to let people down?

[Wednesday

The Scary Truth [Saturday
March 5th, 2011 at 2:49pm]

theyarnproject
I started my blog, June 9, of last year. It has been a complete Godsend. Yarn has been a complete Godsend. It is INSANE to think that a hobby (such as working with yarn) could be so wonderful, on so many levels. But, it can. It is a complete metaphor, for my recovery, and for the whole 'being misdiagnosed with cerebral palsy' thing.
I mean, really...
I approach new projects, feeling this overwhelming sense of fear. I think to myself: 'I will NEVER be able to loom knit that fish pillow', or 'I will never learn to knit.' But, I do. Somehow, I do.
So, when I think that I will never be able to learn to walk, I just remember that I have learned to work with yarn. If I can do this...Then darn it. I CAN LEARN TO WALK.

Getting Through Recovery, With A Metaphor [Friday
February 25th, 2011 at 6:34pm]

theyarnproject
Hey there, everyone. My name is Michael Leach, and for a long time, I was told that I had cerbral palsy. I was 27, when I found out that was not true. I had spent 8 years in a wheelchair (needlessly). It turned out that I had a disability, known as Strumpell Lorraine Syndrome.
The good news...Surgery was an option. With surgery, I could up, out of the wheelchair, and in time, I could walk again.
On November 18, 2009, I had the bilateral foot surgery, which would change my life.
Now...I was on the road to a long recovery, with nothing to focus on, but the pain. So, I decided to take up the challenge, of learning to crochet, loom knit, and knit. I just thought it would be fun to learn these, and keep a blog about it.
In some weird way, I quickly realized that the yarn I worked with, was a metaphor, for my recovery.
And so, I keep working with yarn. And, through it all, I have learned patience, from yarn. Patience, which helps me continue my road to full recovery.

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION!! [Wednesday
February 16th, 2011 at 5:48pm]

shutupxslut
Hi everyone! I am a direct care staff for a residential home in CA. I have started a petition on change.org to provide more funding for agencies and organizations that provide the care for individuals with disabilities. As far as I see it, many people, those who DON'T have disabilities, often don't take the opportunities they are given to succeed in life. All the while, the people that do have disabilities have goals they want to reach that could be anything from dressing themselves, to getting a job. People with disabilities require direct care support to achieve these goals. Bottom line. However, direct care support staff get paid very little when it is such a rewarding job. I find this very wrong. We put our lives, stress, problems, and issues aside to assist others to have a great quality of life. They deserve to be as independent as they can be. They have human rights just like anyone else and providing more pay to direct care staff would be more of incentive to help them achieve their goals. Please help get more funding for staff and for agencies. I am asking you to please sign this petition, share it with friends and family and ask them to sign too! Read the petition and the letter that is going to be sent to legislators and you will see my proposed plan. Thank you all very much!

New member, asking a few questions [Friday
January 21st, 2011 at 4:55pm]

ladycatherina
Thank you very much for starting this group! Looking forward to meeting you all and sending love and prayers, hope to offer support and encouragement to everyone here.

Hi, I'm Cristina Deptula, and I live near San Francisco. I'm in my late twenties, and I've assumed caregiving responsibilities for a very good friend I've known for seven years. She's a widow with children, estranged from her family for a variety of complicated reasons, and I'm basically all she has left (and we're trying to change that!)

She has adult ADD, narcolepsy, and Jealous and Persecutory Delusional Disorder - so she cannot keep to any kind of schedule, falls asleep at random times of the day and night, and has trouble getting along with others as she can get frustrated and paranoid. She's also the victim of emotional abuse as a child and domestic violence as an adult, and some of her issues stem from that. Now, she's been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy, and has
diabetes and weight problems as a result of some of her mental health
medications...and she's only 43!

I live about 45 minutes away and do a lot of work for her over the phone and email (selling items on Craigslist for her to help her make extra income, making and reminding her of medical and dental appointments, looking up social services and filling out applications, locating and hiring in-home supportive service
caregivers - she qualifies in Marin County to have someone help out around the house about two hours every weekday, which helps but she calls and texts at all kinds of random hours asking me to make phone calls for her, so she really needs someone who can be on-call, or a team of people.)

I'm all right helping her for now, but would like some way to know what's realistic for her to eventually learn how to do for herself and what she will need assistance with all her life and isn't fair to expect her to handle.

Also, I'm currently 'between jobs' and staying with my parents, who don't understand mental illnesses in general and believe my friend is simply taking advantage of me. It's awkward to have to step out of the house, excuse myself from dinner, etc to make phone calls or look things up online for my friend without them noticing and complaining, and my friend then gets mad about my procrastination and the delays in my helping her. And I don't have any money now myself, I'm selling some of my things on Craigslist to pay off a traffic ticket.
My friend only gets $700 or so a month from SSI disability, which ends up being $300 after she pays her rent. She has two teen children who are staying with her mother because she's too sick to care for them, who don't understand why they've never been able to wear new clothes, own IPhones etc like other young teens in Marin. We go on Craigslist every year to look for donated gifts but this year the economy was so bad no one was able to come through and help, so we're
looking for gifts after the holidays.

I'm looking into work-from-home opportunities so my friend can earn some money on her own and gain some more self-respect, even survey taking opportunities that aren't marketing ploys or scams. Also, something for me so I can help her out and get cash for the gas to drive to and from her place and regularly visit her...she's not near mass transit. I'm currently only making $12 an hour for a part-time telecommute position that leaves my schedule free but leaves me broke!

Also - I'm looking into internship and full-time work opportunities which would be great for my career but which would leave me less able to care for my friend at random moments. The personal calls and time on the Net became an issue in my last fulltime job, and in order to work like a normal person, we really need a larger support system for my friend. I'm committed to NOT abandon her, but know that I'm going to need to recruit other caregivers to be able to move forward in
my own life, and my parents just took on another financial commitment and say they can't support me forever. I'm also in a relationship which may be heading towards marriage and children, and my boyfriend said a few months ago that if we're going to stay together I have to set boundaries with my friend so that our kids (and his emotional needs, etc) won't get shortchanged. For many reasons we need a group of other people my friend can call upon for help when she can't reach me...as I'm not able to help out on call 24/7 for the rest of her life, even though I've been doing that since her husband died in September 2006.

So - does anyone here know where to go to recruit additional helpers as an internship-type opportunity? We can't pay for much of anything now but would be glad to reciprocate in other ways (resume editing, proofreading, letters of recommendation, etc?) I see blogs of well-connected poets, singers, etc who have whole legions of folks helping them out, sending care packages, checking in with them, etc and would like to know how to build a support network.

I recently posted this advertisement for assistance on Craigslist:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/vol/2164488574.html

Please let me know what you think - I'm trying to strike a balance between compassion and trying to empower my friend to take care of herself.

Thanks, sorry for the long intro,

Cristina
